Description:

Speaker Erin Hughes (Senior Hydrologist at Hydrology and Risk Consulting)

Despite water being essential to life, it can also cause devastation. In Queensland,
flooding causes more damage to communities than any other natural hazard and is
likely to be exacerbated by climate change.
In the management of flood risk, flood engineers play a critical role throughout the
lifecycle of a disaster. They are essential in supporting the understanding of flood
risk, provide intelligence during a flood event and assessing damaged infrastructure
and improving the management of future flood planning after flood events.
As a flood engineer, Erin will talk about her work in flood risk management and the
importance of understanding the community’s exposure to different types of flood
risk now and in the future.

Erin specialises in flood risk management and dam safety

and has undertaken many projects for the private and pub-
lic sectors in all states of Australia and internationally.

She is passionate about Science, Technology, Engineering

and Maths education and supporting First Nation communi-
ties to reach their water related goals.

She donates her professional skills to not-for-profit organi-
sations such as WaterAid and Engineers Without Borders.
