Melanie Venz is a Senior Zoologist with the Department of Environment & Science, at the Queensland Herbarium & Biodiversity Science.

She has extensive experience with biodiversity assessments in relation to land management issues (e.g. grazing, clearing, etc.) and & vegetation condition assessment for biodiversity (BioCondition). Melanie also develops terrestrial fauna survey protocols & targeted survey guidelines and prepares status assessments for conservation listings under state legislation.

Melanie will give an illustrative talk on terrestrial vertebrate fauna surveys in Queensland; from the historical perspective of the early zoological collectors and the significant contribution of First Nations people; to the Government Shire Surveys of the 1970s and 80s, and what is happening now. Methods to detect mammals, birds, reptiles and frogs will be outlined; with the increasing role of newer techniques such as camera trapping and acoustic monitoring in the last decade. Other emerging techniques are described, including those targeted for detecting or monitoring rare or cryptic species.

General meetings are usually held at The Hut, 47 Fleming Road, Chapel Hill, on the fourth Wednesday of each month from February to November.

The Annual General Meeting is usually in April, at the start of the April general meeting, with the April talk immediately afterwards.
