Birdwalk: Oxley Common
Saturday 27 April 2019

Lead by: Dawn Muir.

Environment: included open country, long grasses at the side of the track with Acacias, Erythrina trees and Melaleucas, Oxley creek itself, small lagoons (unfortunately largely covered by water hyacinth) and a lake. The water was turbid from recent rain. A wide variety of birds were seen and/or heard:

Noisy Miners (by far the most frequent spotted), Swallows (also common), Kookaburras, Magpies, Magpie Larks, Torresian Crows, Willy Wagtails, Currawongs, Grey and Pied Butcherbirds, Rainbow Lorikeets and Pale-headed Rosellas, Masked Lapwings, Raptors including a Brown Goshawk and a pair each of the Black and Black-shouldered Kite, Bar-Shouldered Doves, Spotted Doves, Fairy Wrens including Blue Fairy Wrens, White-browed Scrubwren, many Brown Honeyeaters, Scaly Honeyeater, Scarlet Honeyeater, Leeuwin Honeyeater, Tree Martins, White-throated Gerygones, Tawny Grass Birds, Cattle Egret, Figbirds, White Ibis, Straw-necked Ibis, Rufous Whistler, Rainbow Bee-eater, Grey Fantail, Grey Shrike-thrush, Golden-headed Cisticola, Brown Quail, Crested Pigeon, Double-barred Finch, Red-browed Finch, Silvereyes, and a mixed feeding flock of Silvereyes, Fantails and Brown Honeyeaters. On the Lagoon and lake we saw White-headed Stilts, Dusky Moorhens, Pacific Black Ducks, a Sacred Kingfisher, Intermediate Egrets, possibly a Great Egret, Pelicans, and a Little Black Cormorant. On the way back we added a few new species - Horsfield’s Bronze Cuckoo, Chestnut-breasted Mannikins, Varied Triller and Olive-backed Oriole.

We also saw a nestbox the hole of which had been enlarged, probably by a possum, and a swallow collecting mud for a nest. Of concern was the sighting of a fox in the vegetation behind the lagoon.

THECA’s July birdwalk  at the Mt Ommaney Board walk attracted 13 walkers on a cold dry morning.  34 species were seen.  –

The creek was flowing following a storm. There had been some localised flooding. Thirteen members attended and surprisingly, though not much was in flower, many species were seen - and a wallaby, the first we've seen in the area! The White-breasted Woodswallows seen near the entrance to the park was a real highlight as was the flock of White-throated Needletails hawking for insects overhead.

Seventeen Mile Rocks Road, Seventeen Mile Rocks (UBD 198 D3)
23rd November 2013
Compiled By: D Muir

Following storm rains the outing to Seventeen Miles Rock Park was surprisingly productive of bird activity. We were fortunate to be in the "right place at the right time" to see a female Brush Turkey busy scratching soil and leaf litter over the egg she had just laid in a mound. The male was nowhere in sight. However, on our return he was intent on his inspection of the mound. Female had already moved away.

A raptor (Pacific Baza) was seen doing "aerial acrobatics" high in the sky with loops and dives and changes of direction. It was identified as a Pacific Baza since we had heard one call and there were no other raptors in the area. The have been other reports of such behaviour by Pacific Bazas at present in Brisbane.

We also watched a single Channel-billed cuckoo (probably the male) leading two Torresian Crows away from their nesting area with a great deal of noise from both the crows and the cuckoo. Presumably the female was able to slip into the crow nest to lay her egg. Channel-billed Cuckoos are known to parasitize crows, Pied Currawongs, magpies and there is a report of Noisy Friarbirds being hosts.

Species seen or heard (h):

Australian Brush-turkey, Australian Wood Duck, Rock Dove, Crested Pigeon, Darter, Eastern Great Egret, Australian White Ibis, Pacific Baza, Pale-vented Bush-hen (H), Little Corella, Rainbow Lorikeet, Eastern Koel (H); Channel-billed Cuckoo, Laughing Kookaburra, Superb Fairy-wren, Red-backed Fairy-wren, Variegated Fairy-wren, Striated Pardalote, Lewin's Honeyeater (H), Noisy Miner, Brown Honeyeater, Blue-faced Honeyeater, Eastern Whipbird, (H), Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike, Cicadabird (H), Grey Shrike-thrush (H), Australian Figbird, Grey Butcherbird, Pied Butcherbird, Australian Magpie, Torresian Crow, Magpie-lark, Tawny Grassbird, Silvereye, Welcome Swallow, Fairy Martin, Common Myna, Double-barred Finch (H).
